IIT-Madras won 2017 IEEE Spectrum Technology in the Service of Society Award
The system is considered as an ideal option to light up an entire home that is not connected to power grid.
The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras in the first week of March 2017 was selected for the 2017 IEEE Spectrum Technology in the Service of Society Award.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has chosen the IIT-M for the award for its solar-direct current (DC) inverter system.
The IEEE Spectrum Technology in the Service of Society Award is presented to a company or an institution voted by the IEEE Spectrum editors as having developed the technology that has the potential to benefit mankind.
Details related to the system
• The system was developed by Centre for Decentralised Power Systems at IIT-M using micro grid technology.
• Its ability to tap rooftop solar power makes it the most energy efficient solution for homes and offices.
• The system consists of a DC solar generation unit, DC power-line, DC appliances and a battery.
• At present, the system is functional in more than 11,000 homes in Rajasthan and Assam.
• It also has been installed in villages of 5 States, namely, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
• As per the developers, the system can power a small home at lesser cost than a conventional solar power system.
• The system will power a few fans, lights, a television, mobile charging, mixer grinder and computer that run on DC current.
