Virdhawal Khade from Maharashtra clocked 24.31s to win the bronze medal in the 50m butterfly event at the Asian Games on 16 November. With his victory, India managed a medal in the swimming category after a gap of 24 years in Asian Games. Khade was precceded by Zhou Jiawei of China (23.66s) who won the gold and Masayuki Kishida of Japan (24.13s) who won the silver.
Khazan Singh had won the last swimming medal for India. He had won silver in the 200m butterfly at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul. Sachin Nag was the only Indian to win gold in swimming in the inaugural edition of the Asiad in Delhi in 1951 in the 100m freestyle.
