Kuldip Nayar honoured with Ramnath Goenka Lifetime Achievement Award

The award for the years 2013 and 2014 was handed over by Information and Broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley.

Kuldip Nayar, a veteran journalist, columnist and author was honoured with Ramnath Goenka Lifetime Achievement Award on 23 November 2015. He was awarded for his contribution to journalism.  

He was conferred with the award at the eighth edition of the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence awards ceremony held in Delhi.

The award for the years 2013 and 2014 was handed over by Information and Broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley, who also handed several awards in different categories to over 56 journalists for their exceptional reportage in print as well as broadcast media.


Kuldip Nayar
• He is former editor of Indian Express.
• For leading a protest against the excesses of the administration during the Emergency (21-month period in 1975–77), he was jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). At the time of emergency, he was a Urdu press reporter.
• He has been a veteran Indian journalist, syndicated columnist, human right activist and author, noted for his long career as a left-wing political commentator.
• He was a member of India's delegation to the United Nations in 1996.
• He was appointed High Commissioner to Great Britain in 1990.
• He was nominated as a Member of the upper house of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha in August 1997.

Nayar is also the author of 15 books, including
• Distant Neighbours: A Tale of the Subcontinent (1972)
• India after Nehru (1975)
• India House (1992)
• The Judgement: Inside story of the emergency in India (1977)
• The Martyr: Bhagat Singh Experiments in Revolution (2000)
• Wall at Wagah – India Pakistan Relationship (2003)
• Scoop!: Inside Stories from Partition to the Present (2006 )

Nayar's autobiography entitled, Beyond the Lines was released in July 2012.


Some other awardees include
Prakash Kardaley Memorial Award for Civic Journalism (2014): Radheshyam Bapu Jadhav of the Times of India. He was awarded for his reports on illegal buildings in Pune and the fear of the residents, amid political apathy.
Prakash Kardaley Memorial Award for Civic Journalism (2013): Richard Joseph of Rashtra Deepika. He was awarded for a story documenting life of children in tribal villages who drop out of school to support their families.

b) Series of reports from Syria and Iraq on the havoc wrought by the Islamic State
c) Sterilisation deaths in Chhattisgarh
