Telecommunication Department decided to make it mandatory for mobile operators for getting clearance from the Wildlife Division of the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for setting up mobile phone towers. The decision was taken to protect animals, bees and birds from the bad effects of radiation from mobile phone towers.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the experts committee formed by MoEF and chaired by Asad Rahmani to study the effect of mobile towers on wildlife. The committee decided to plan a set of guidelines while installing towers so as to avoid their dangerous effects on a human beings as well as animals. Asad Rahmani is the Director of Bombay Natural History Society.
Telecommunication department told the committee that it has taken proper measures to avoid installation of mobile towers in schools, crowded areas and roof-tops.
Mobile phone operators are already required to get clearance from Defence and Civil aviation authorities for installing towers in areas which had a bearing on their operations.
Recent Studies in India and other countries had revealed that radiation from mobile towers harmed wildlife, especially insects and birds.
