Union Government to soon launch ‘Khelo India’ programme
The Union government would soon be launching the Khelo India programme at a cost of Rs 1756 crore for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20. The programme aims at mainstreaming sports as a tool for individual development, community development, economic development and national development.
The programme would cover about 200 million children in the age group of 10-18 under a massive national physical fitness drive. Under the scheme, a campaign will be launched from 31 January 2018 to 8 February 2018, to spot sports talent under 17 years in schools, which will be telecasted live.
India joins Wassenaar Arrangement
India joined the Wassenaar Arrangement after completing the internal procedures. The membership is expected to facilitate high-technology tie-ups for country's defence and space programmes.
India has become the arrangement's 42nd participating State. According to India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, this membership is the second diplomatic success for India for the membership of export control regimes after it joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in 2016.
India reclaim bronze medal at Hockey World League Final
India on 10 December 2017 beat Germany to reclaim the bronze medal at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final tournament.
Indian took the lead in the 21st minute through SV Sunil’s field goal. Germany equalised the score through its reserve goalkeeper Mark Appel in the 36th minute. A penalty corner by Harmanpreet Singh gave India the 2-1 lead in the 54th minute, which remained the difference between the two teams and helped seal the third place for India.
India had also won the bronze in the last edition of the tournament in Raipur in 2015.
