His Holiness the Dalai Lama was awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice on 18 November 2010 by Pakistan based the Global Harmony Foundation. The awarded was presented Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee presented the award to the Tibetan leader. The 14th and the current Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935. His Religious name is Tenzin Gyatso which has been shortened from Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, born Lhamo Dondrub. During the 1959 Tibetan uprising the Dalai Lama fled to India where he denounced the People's Republic and established a government in exile. He continues to fight for an independant Tibet.
Apart from the Dalai Lama the award was also conferred upon Colin Gonsalves, a senior advocate of Supreme Court of India for legal aid in addressing human rights, Sewa Ashram, an NGO for their work amongst the homeless destitute in Delhi, Dr Udit raj for Dalit empowerment and emancipation, Y.P. Singh for his campaign against corruption in upper echelons of public service especially in the police and income tax departments, Sumaira Abdulali for advocacy on noise pollution and environment and Sayed Iqbal Haider, a former senator, federal minister of law and former attorney general of Pakistan.
