PM Modi address to the nation: Key Highlights

The Prime Minister said that when some things are there since a long time, we assume that they will never change or go away and 370 was something similar. PM Modi said that both Article 370 and Article 35 A were being used as a weapon by Pakistan against India. No one could say how these two Articles were helping the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and there was never any discussion on how these Articles were having a negative effect on the citizens of the state. Both J&K and Ladakh have seen not much development.

Even the laws applicable in the entire nation were not benefiting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The children in other Indian states have the right to education but children in Jammu and Kashmir were denied this right. The women in Jammu and Kashmir also do not have the same rights provided to women elsewhere.

In the case of sanitation workers, while sanitation workers of other states come under the sanitation worker act, workers in J&K were deprived of it. The minimum wages act is also being implemented everywhere in India except for Jammu and Kashmir. The laws for SCs and STs were also not applicable in J&K. Further, in many states, strong laws are in place to stop atrocities against Dalits, but this was not the case in Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi assures employment

PM Modi in his announcement promised to extend the same employment benefits given to police and state administration workers in other states to the workers, policemen and their families in Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi promised that all posts lying vacant in J&K will get filled now. The PM Scholarship scheme will also be expanded to Jammu and Kashmir now. PM Modi promised that the job opportunities will increase in J&K.

Jammu and Kashmir's Union Territory status temporary

PM Modi announced that Jammu and Kashmir has been designated as a union territory on a temporary basis. The state will get back its statehood soon. Ladakh, however, will continue to remain as a union territory. The Prime Minister stated that the decision to keep J&K directly under the central administration was made after a lot of thought. PM Modi clarified that ever since the state was placed under the President's rule, the state administration has been directly in contact with the centre due to which the impact of good governance has begun showing on the ground level. Several projects blocked for decades have been sped up now.

Kashmir to elect its own leaders

PM Modi stated that for decades, lakhs of residents who came to Jammu and Kashmir after partition in 1947 were denied voting rights. These people could neither vote nor contest in assembly or local polls. The Prime Minister promised that now everyone will be given the right to vote. The PM emphasised that the people's representative will be chosen by the people of the state itself. J&K will have its own CM, Cabinet, MPs and MLAs like it did before. The state elections will also happen in J&K like before.

The Prime Minister said that he has complete faith that under the new system, Jammu and Kashmir will be free of terrorism and separatism.

Tourism: PM invites Bollywood back to J&K, Ladakh

PM Modi stated that Ladakh has the capability to become the number one tourist hub. The Prime Minister said that there was a time when Jammu and Kashmir was one of the favourite destinations of Bollywood filmmakers but terrorism drove most of the movie projects away. However, PM Modi expressed confidence that the new start will bring Bollywood and the movies back to J&K and Ladakh. He, in fact,  said that he is confident that in the future even International films will be shot there.

PM Modi requests opposition to keep India first

PM Modi stated that regardless of who said what during the Parliamentary session, what is important is that they all keep India first, keeping the differences aside. PM Modi said that all the doubts of the opposition will be cleared.

PM Modi promises a better future for Kashmir

PM Modi wished everyone on the holy occasion of Eid and said that the government is ensuring that the people in Jammu and Kashmir can celebrate Eid without any problem. The Prime Minister also promised to assist those who wish to celebrate the festival in the union territory.
