British Scientists at Edinburgh University, in the second week of April 2011, created human kidneys from stem cells in a break through which could lead to transplant patients growing their organs. The scientists created kidneys in a laboratory using amniotic fluid and animal foetal cells. The scientifically created kidneys are half a centimeter in length. Once the kidneys transplanted into any human it would grow into a full size organ.
To make the above experiment a success, scientists will collect amnitiotic fluid surrounding the growing embryo in the womb, when a baby is born. They will use this fluid to create the matching kidney if that person develops kidney disease later in life. It could solve the problem of rejection that can arise when an organ from a donor is used. This scientific breakthrough could help patients create their own replacement organs sans the risk of rejection which usually happens during transplant procedures.
This scientific breakthrough is scheduled to be officially unveiled at Edinburgh’s Science Festival. Recently, Japanese scientists grew a retina from stem cells for the first time. This technology could be ready for humans in 10 years time.
