Srinivasan appointed as first Chairman of ICC

Jun 26, 2014 14:14 IST

Narayanaswami Srinivasan on 26 June 2014 was formally appointed as the first Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a period of two years from 2014 to 2016. Mustafa Kamal of Bangladesh was named as the 11th President of the ICC. The new team will assume the office from 1 July 2014.

Name of Srinivasan and Kamal were finalised by the 52-member council at its annual conference in Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia. This meet also revamped the corporate governance structure of ICC by amending Memorandum and Articles of the Association.

The revamp will also hand major executive decision-making authority to the Big Three of the game — India, Australia and England.

Other decisions taken by ICC Board

• From 2016, the ICC Board will continue to be the primary decision-making body and will elect the ICC Chairman for a term of two-year.
• Approved a new Executive Committee formation that will report to the ICC Board. The decision followed the ICC Board resolution of 8 February 2014 in Singapore which approved the constitutional changes that was finalised on 10 April 2014.
• The initial Chair of the Executive Committee will be Cricket Australia’s Chairman, Wally Edwards, while the Chair of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&CA) will continue to be England and Wales Cricket Board’s Chairman, Giles Clarke.
• ICC Board also cleared the decks for Oman to become the 38th Associate Member of the ICC. However, it suspended Affiliate Membership of Brunei and removed Tonga as an Affiliate member. The ICC now has 105 members.
• Board confirmed that the USA Cricket Association (USACA) is the ICC’s recognised member in the USA.  The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and ICC management will, however, continue to work with USACA

Srinivasan appointment as Chairman of ICC

His appointment came after the Supreme Court refused to stop Srinivasan nomination to the ICC top position. Earlier, Srinivasan was barred by the Supreme Court from carrying out his duties as Board of Cricket of India (BCCI) President due to ongoing investigations into the match-fixing allegations in 2013 edition of the IPL.
