Tamil Nadu government launched Amma pharmacies to provide low cost medicines

State Government of Tamil Nadu on 26 June 2014 launched Amma Pharmacy (Amma Marundhagam) to sell quality medicines at a lower price. These pharmacies will enable people to avail medicines at a low price as the medicines will be sold at a discount of 10 percent to the maximum retail price.

Jayalalitha, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to start the pharmacies inaugurated ten Amma pharmacies in seven districts of the state. The districts where the pharmacy were launched by the Chief Minister through a video-conferencing from the secretariat are Chennai, Erode, Salem, Cuddalore, Madurai, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar. The launched outlets has been established at an expense of 1 core rupees with an outlay of 10 lakh rupees each outlet.

These Amma medical shops will be set up at popular places like bus stands, marker places and at prime places in the districts. The government will outsource the pharmacists for these shops. To preserve the emergency medicines cold storage facilities have been set up.
