Tamilnadu government banned the screening of English film Dam 999 with immediate effect. The movie is believed to be based on disputed Mullaperiyar Dam between Tamilnadu and Kerala.

Sohan Roy directed the film. The film focuses on a dam and how it collapses and ravages the surrounding areas. The film has been dubbed in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam. The English film, released by Warner Bros, is scheduled for 25 November 2011.

Political parties protesting against the film in Tamilnadu alleged that the project financed by Keralites, has been named Dam 999 referring to the legal rights held by Tamilnadu over the dam for 999 years.  Tamilnadu is locked in a row with Kerala over Mullaperiyar dam.

Mullaperiyar Dam is constructed over the Periyar River in 1895 Kerala, India. The Periyar National Park, Thekkady is located around the Periyar reservoir formed by the backwaters of this dam. It is operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu according to a 999-year lease agreement made during erstwhile British colonial rule.
