Tata Teleservices limited (TTL) on 27 March 2014 launched new Wi-Fi business in Chennai. The company plans to connect everything from India Inc’s employee buses to educational institutions. Apart from the usual sectors like airport, hospitality and malls, the company plans roping in sectors such as education and transit busses.

imageCompany will launch Wi-Fi roaming scratch cards that can be purchased through retail outlets to monetized banner space. It can be used at Tata Docomo hotspots across India.

Setting up Wi-Fi hotspots in the hospitality and retail sectors has largely been avoided by many telecom companies for the simple reason that monetisation is exceedingly difficult.

Tata Teleservices Ltd. (TTL) has taken a plunge towards commercialisation by roping in brands like Google and Citibank, which use the company’s Wi-Fi platform to advertise their brands.

TTL at present enjoys a first-mover advantage as it rides on a strong fibre backbone with Tata Communications.

Till January 2014 Company had set up close to 516 hotspots and plan to set up 3000 to 4000 hotspots across nine cities.
