The Delhi Cabinet on 8 November 2011 decided to waive VAT on fertilsers to provide relief to the farmers. The farmers were facing difficulties because of the high tax rate on fertilizers. Due to the high tax on fertilizers, a significant difference had emerged in the prices in Haryana and Delhi.
In Delhi, fertilizers mentioned in serial number 73 and 188 of the First Schedule were taxed at the rate of 5%, while the fertilizers mentioned in serial number 20 of the third schedule were taxed at the rate of 12.5% from 1 April 2010. Following the Delhi Cabinet decision, fertilizers will not be taxed under VAT.
