Assam Government found 3,11,21,004 persons eligible for inclusion in final NRC. On the other hand, 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims have been excluded from the list.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announces the merger of ten big public sector banks (PSBs) into four. The banks which are being merged are Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, United Bank of India, Indian Bank, Allahabad Bank, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank. India will now have 12 Public Sector Banks from 27 in 2017. The merger of banks was announced under the Bank Consolidation plan among other major initiatives and steps to accelerate the economic growth of India.
The Central Government has recently commissioned an Rs. 9.3 Cr study to review microbial diversity along with the entire length of the Ganga. Researchers believe that the stretch of 2,500 km long river contains microbes that may promote ‘antibiotic resistance’. The project will be undertaken by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), (Nagpur), Motilal Nehru Institute of Technology (Allahabad), and Sardar Patel Institute of Science & Technology (Gorakhpur).
Pakistan has successfully test-fired nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile Ghaznavi from Sonmiani test range near Karachi. The information was shared by Pakistan Armed Forces spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor through a tweet on August 29, 2019.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Fit India Movement on the occasion of National Sports day at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The Fit India Movement aims to encourage Indians to include fitness activities and sports in their daily lives to pave way for a healthy and fit lifestyle. The Prime Minister during his speech on Fit India said that fitness is not just a word but a way to lead a healthy life. The Prime Minister said that on this a great sportsperson was born, Major Dhyan Chand and he surprised the world with his fitness, stamina, and hockey stick."
The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for Review of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in various sectors. Foreign Direct Investment is an important driver of economic growth and a source of non-debt finance for the economic development of the country. These amendments to the FDI Policy will liberalize and simplify the FDI policy to provide ease of doing business in the country. More FDI will contribute to the growth of investment, income and employment in the country.
The Union Government has constituted a 5-member Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into issues concerning the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The GoM will look into the development, economic and social issues of the two UTs and suggest ways to improve the situation. The two UTs will come into existence on October 31. The GoM will comprise Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Jitendra Singh, Thawar Chand Gehlot, Narendra Singh Tomar and Dharmendra Pradhan.
PS Officer Aparna Kumar will be honoured with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018 in the ‘Land adventure’ category. The names of the winners of Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2018 were announced by the government on August 27, 2019. Aparna Kumar is a 2002 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh Cadre. She is currently posted as DIG in the Indo Tibetan Police Force at Dehradun. Aparna Kumar is the first IPS officer to be honoured with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018.
Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi will be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of former DDCA President. The DDCA (Delhi and District Cricket Association) made the announcement on August 27, 2019. The DDCA decided to rename the stadium after the former DDCA president, Arun Jaitley, who breathed his last on August 24, 2019. Speaking on the same, current DDCA president Rajat Sharma said, "What can be better to have it named after the man who got it rebuilt under his presidentship.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to transfer a sum of Rs. 1,76,051 crore to the Government of India as per the recommendations made by Bimal Jalan Committee. The surplus money includes a sum of Rs. 1,23,414 crore for the year 2018-19 and Rs. 52,637 crore of excess provisions identified as per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF) adopted at the meeting of the Central Board.
