World Bank and India, on 14 January 2011, signed the agreement under which World Bank is to extend a credit of 255 million dollars to India to set up a project for lessening the impact of cyclones. The project is aimed at improving the early warning and communication systems in the Indian coastal areas and strengthening the ability of the communities near the coastal areas to respond to disaster. The project also seeks to better the availability of emergency shelters for them.
As per the project, an early warning system would be setup in 1740 villages out of which 980 villages in Orissa and 760 villages in Andhra Pradesh within 5 kilometres of the sea coastline would avail from the system. Besides, 148 multipurpose cyclone shelters and 22 new bridges would be constructed at important crossings in Andhra Pradesh and 155 shelters would be built in Orissa.
