Every year on December 20th, the world comes together to celebrate International Human Solidarity Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the interconnectedness of our destinies. It's a day to recognise the importance of working together in solidarity to address the challenges that humans face and build a brighter future for all.

International Human Solidarity Day is not just about raising awareness; it is also about taking action. This day is a call to each and every one of us to step up and contribute to a more justified and equitable world. There are countless ways to show your solidarity, whether it's through volunteering your time to support local charities, advocating for social justice issues, or simply being more mindful of the needs of others in your community.

What is the Background of International Human Solidarity Day?

International Human Solidarity Day's background is rooted in both the recognition of solidarity as a fundamental value and the need for global cooperation to address challenges. Here's a breakdown:

  • The Millennium Declaration: Adopted in 2000, this declaration laid out eight goals for eradicating poverty, hunger, disease, and other challenges. Notably, it also identified solidarity as a core value for international relations in the 21st century, emphasising the responsibility of those who benefit most to help those who benefit least.
  • World Solidarity Fund: Established in 2002, this UN Development Programme trust fund supports poverty eradication and social development in developing countries, particularly among the most vulnerable populations.

The UN mentions: “Solidarity is identified in the Millennium Declaration as one of the fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century, wherein those, who either suffer or benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most. Consequently, in the context of globalization and the challenge of growing inequality, strengthening of international solidarity is indispensable.”

“Therefore, the UN General Assembly, convinced that the promotion of the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing is important for combating poverty, proclaimed 20 of December as International Human Solidarity Day,” it adds.

What Is the UN’s Concept of Solidarity?

At its core, the United Nations envisions a world united by solidarity – a concept woven into the very fabric of its existence. This principle manifests in several ways:

Collective Security: The organisation's foundation rests on the belief that nations, bound by shared values and responsibility, can forge peace and security together. Collective security, a cornerstone of the UN Charter, embodies this spirit of solidarity, where member states pledge mutual support in upholding international peace and stability.

Cooperation Beyond Borders: Recognising the interconnected nature of global challenges, the UN champions international collaboration to tackle issues like poverty, hunger, and climate change. This collaborative approach, rooted in solidarity, fosters partnerships and resource sharing, amplifying the impact of each nation's efforts.

Humanity at the Heart: Solidarity extends beyond states, encompassing the well-being of all individuals. The UN actively promotes human rights and social development, striving to ensure an equitable world where everyone has the opportunity to flourish. This commitment to universal progress reflects the deep-seated solidarity at the heart of the organisation's mission.

International Human Solidarity Day: In 2005, the General Assembly designated December 20th as International Human Solidarity Day, underscoring the significance of this value in the 21st century. This annual observance serves as a call to action, reminding us of our shared responsibility and encouraging collective efforts to build a brighter future for all.

The UN mentions: “The General Assembly, on 22 December 2005, by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the twenty-first century, and in that regard decided to proclaim 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day.”

In essence, the UN's concept of solidarity is a powerful force for good in the world. It embodies the belief that by working together, we can overcome any obstacle and build a more just and prosperous world for all.
