List of Governors of Assam: The Governor is the chief executive head of state. Just like President, he is a nominal executive head or titular or constitutional head. He or she also acts as an agent of the central government. Therefore, the office of the Governor has a dual role. Mainly, there is a Governor for each state, but as per the 7th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1956, the appointment of the same person as a Governor for two or more states. Key Facts
- Present Governor of Assam is Jagdish Mukhi and he assumed his office on 10 October 2017.
- Muhammad Saleh Akbar Hydari was the first Governor of Assam after India's independence and he assumed his office on 15 August 1947 .
- Articles 153 to 167 in Part VI of the Constitution deal with the state executive.
- The state executive consists of the governor, the chief minister, the council of ministers, and the advocate general of the state.
- Two qualifications are laid down in the Constitution for the appointment of a person as a governor namely he should be a citizen of India, and he should have completed the age of 35 years.
- A governor holds office for a term of five years from the date he or she enters his office. However, this term of five years is subject to the pleasure of the President. Also, he or she can resign at any time by addressing a letter to the President.
- However, the governor has no security of tenure and no fixed term of office. He may be removed by the President at any time.
- Governor can pardon, reprieve, respite, remit, suspend, or commute the punishment, or sentence of any person convicted of any office against a state law.
- Governor cannot pardon a death sentence. Even, if a state law prescribes for death sentence them the power to grant pardon lies with the President and not the governor. But the governor can suspend, remit or commute a death sentence.
