Handicrafts are the creative products made by the skill of the hand without the help of modern machinery and equipment’s. It is more precisely expressed as artisanal handicraft or handmade, is any of a wide variety of types of work where useful and decorative objects are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. There are five themes of handicraft– Needle Work, tribal Crafts, fibre & Eco friendly Crafts, Fashion Accessories and festal Decorations.
Institute and Organisation related to Handicrafts
1. All India Handicraft Board
It was established in 1952. It is an advisory body and gives recommendation to government for promotion and growth as handicrafts in India. Handicraft is subject of state list so State Government to take initiative for development of this sector.
2. Handicraft and Handloom Export Corporation of India
It was founded in 1962 is an auxiliary company of Indian state trade, corporation. It is engaged in a national awareness of the economic, social, cultural and environmental development of artisans and their crafts. It also supported with an enabling environment that promote traditional market.
3. Centre for Regional Design and Technical Development
Its regional offices are in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. Design and Technical It directs the research, development and training for the handlooms Development sector in country.
4. National Institute of Design
The headquarter of NID is located at Ahmedabad directs the research and Design development for Indian art and crafts. It was established by the effort of farsightedness of Charles EEMS, who recognised art and crafts as a remedy of problems.
5. Indian Packaging Institute
It is located at Mumbai and Institute regional offices are in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The objective of this institution is accelerating the industrial education, generation of employment and issuing certificate of packaging course. This institution is engaged in distance education also. It is recognised by Asian Packaging Foundation.
6. All India Cottage Industries Board
It was founded in 1948. The board recommended central and state government to promote the cottage industries. In 1949 central collage emporium was founded in Delhi.
7. Not-for-Profit NGO
The Crafts Council of India (CCI) was founded in 1964 by Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. The CCI is a not profit society headquartered in Chenna Dastkar It is a not for profit NGO established in 1981 by Laila Taiyab ji along with a group of six women. Dastkar assists crafts people through skills training. Collaborative design innovation and product development.
