The Oscar Award is the most coveted awards in the cinema, which is given for the excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. It is also known as the Academy Award. This award consists of 24 awards, which are given for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The award is organised annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
It is the oldest entertainment awards ceremony in the world and it is also equivalent to the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music.
The recipients of the award given a copy of a golden statuette which is officially called the 'Academy Award Merit' and more commonly referred to as 'Oscar'. The golden statuette was originally sculpted by George Stanley from a design sketch by Cedric Gibbons.
