In 2023, the average value of Major League Baseball (MLB) teams surged by 12%, reaching an impressive $2.32 billion. The 2022 season witnessed a remarkable 7.8% growth in revenue, net of stadium debt service, soaring to an unprecedented $10.3 billion. This unprecedented growth was chiefly propelled by a substantial 64% surge in ticket revenue, including postseason and spring training, totalling $2.4 billion, a stark contrast to the previous year's capacity restrictions. Additionally, revenue from premium seating, comprising suites and club seating, witnessed a notable 35% increase, reaching $1.16 billion.
However, despite the revenue surge, operating income, measured as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA), experienced a downturn. Averaging at $17.6 million per team, this marked a significant 20% decline from the preceding season. This decline was primarily attributed to a 13% rise in player costs, encompassing salaries, bonuses, and benefits, which reached a staggering $5.2 billion. Additionally, there was an increase in Selling, General, and Administrative (SG&A) expenses.
Nevertheless, amidst these financial dynamics, the New York Yankees emerged as the most valuable baseball team of 2023.
