The Srinagar administration has set out to transform 180 Government-run schools to ‘Smart Schools’. The schools to be upgraded will be equipped with modern amenities and learning tools to ensure enhanced learning outcomes, said the officials. The objective of the “Smart School’ project is binging the public schools at par with private schools. The officials also said that the objective is to complete the project within 6 months duration and a dedicated team has been constituted for the planning, implementation and monitoring of the same. The also mentioned that the budget allocated for the projects is Rs 6 crores.
Roadmap to ‘Smart Schools’
Among the 180 schools to be upgraded, 120 are located in urban areas and 60 in rural areas of the district. As a part of the ‘Smart School’ project, a part of the Jammu and Kashmir government's 'Back to Village' programme, the infrastructure of these schools will be upgraded along with improving learning outcomes through a range of interventions.
Among the interventions, said the officials, include round-the-clock power and water supplies, the establishment of libraries, science laboratories, IT labs, smart classes, refurbishing of buildings where required and upgrading of furniture and equipment. The other highlights of the project are capacity building and training of teachers, HR management, continuous evaluation and society involvement, skills labs, sporting infrastructure and games and innovation grant.
‘Smart School’ Project - Review Meeting
Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, in a review meeting, said the project was close to his heart. He said that the district administration will to it that these schools are equipped with the latest facilities and transformed in a manner to improve the learning outcome. The DC said that the transformation work has already been started in about 100 schools located in urban as well as rural areas of the district. He also said that while funds for 25 schools located in urban Srinagar have already been released, funds for another 70 schools which had already been partly equipped with modern facilities under the Centre sponsored ‘Samagra Shiksha’ scheme, will be released in due course of time.
