CBSE Private Candidate Eligibility 2027: Check who can apply for Class 10 and 12 board exams, including Essential Repeat, Compartment and Improvement candidates.
CBSE Private Candidate Eligibility 2027: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has opened the online application process for eligible private candidates appearing for the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations 2027. The Board issued separate notifications for private candidates on October 7, 2026, and the application process started from October 8.
However, not every student can appear for the CBSE board exams as a private candidate. The Board has specified particular categories under which students can submit the examination form. Candidates must check the eligibility criteria carefully before applying.
CBSE Private Candidate Eligibility 2027: Who Can Apply?
CBSE allows candidates from specified categories to appear for the board examinations as private candidates. The eligibility differs depending on whether the student is applying for Class 10 or Class 12.
For Class 12, eligible categories include candidates appearing under the Essential Repeat, Compartment and Improvement of Performance categories, subject to the conditions specified by CBSE.
CBSE Class 12 Private Candidate Eligibility
Candidates who fall under the following categories can apply for the CBSE Class 12 private examination 2027:
1. Essential Repeat candidates: Students whose result was declared Essential Repeat in the CBSE Class 12 examination 2026 can apply.
Candidates whose results were declared Fail/Essential Repeat in Class 12 examinations held in previous years, including 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026, may also apply, subject to the conditions prescribed by the Board.
2. Candidates unable to appear due to medical reasons: Candidates who had completed the regular course of study and were allotted a roll number for the Class 12 examination but could not appear because of medical reasons may also be covered under the private candidate provisions. This does not include cases involving shortage of attendance.
3. Compartment candidates: Students who were placed in the Compartment category in the CBSE Class 12 Main or Supplementary Examination 2026 can apply. Such candidates can apply for the subject in which they were placed in Compartment.
4. Improvement of Performance: Candidates who passed the CBSE Class 12 examination in 2026 can apply for improvement of performance in one or more subjects, provided they meet the eligibility conditions. Candidates must have appeared for the same subject or subjects in the 2026 Class 12 examination.

CBSE Class 10 Private Candidate Eligibility 2027
CBSE has also invited applications from eligible private candidates for the Class 10 board examinations 2027. The Board's October 7 notification specifies the categories and conditions applicable to Class 10 private candidates.
Students should check the official Class 10 private candidate notification and its annexures before submitting the form, as eligibility depends on the candidate's previous examination status and the category under which they are applying.
Candidates should not assume that a student who is currently studying in a regular CBSE-affiliated school can simply switch to private candidate status. Private candidate eligibility is governed by the categories and conditions specified by CBSE.
