The National Institute of Technology, Warangal has developed a virtual reality software to help reduce the accidents and unforeseen incidents in the mining industry. The software has been developed by Cusmat Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a startup that emerged from the know-how gathered at the Centre for Innovation and Incubation, NIT Warangal. The startup is the brainchild of the former NIT Warangal students Soumya Ranjan Harichandan and Anirban Chakraborty.
The software has already been put to use by MOIL India, Pvt. Ltd, Nagpur that has been associated with the ministry of mines. Apart from the projects that the startup is already working on, the Centre will soon be sanctioning three more projects worth INR 1 Crore for similar work. The mining companies are using the VR software as a simulator to train operators to prevent accidents on conveyor belts, lifts used in mines, excavations, loading and unloading process among other things.
The Chief Investigator of the project, Prof L Anjaneyulu, who heads the Centre for Innovation and Incubation at NIT Warangal told the media that 'At the mines, men and material need to be transported by lift. Often if the operator who is overseeing the lift is not well trained, unforeseen accidents can happen. The VR Software developed by them allows the companies to train the operators through simulation methods. The operators are trained in using the winder that moves the lift up and down. Ranjan, CEO of Cusmat Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Said that the software was used in Chennai last year. The company that utilized their software reported a 40% decline in accidents. He further added that there is a huge demand for such software in the mining industry.
