The Tamil Nadu Government has announced holidays for the colleges and universities of the state from 21st December 2019 to 1st January 2020. The Government has stated festivals and local rural body elections as a reason for the holidays. Mangat Ram Sharma, Higher Education Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu has issued a communiqué in this regard to the directors of technical education, registers of all universities under the aegis of the department and collegiate education.
The order issued by Sharma reads that keeping in mind of the fact that students from the rural areas of the state are able to register their votes in the upcoming local rural body polls 2019 and the impending festivities viz. Christmas Day on 25th December and New Year’s Day on 1st January 2020, schools and colleges of the state have been asked to declare additional holidays for the students from 21st December 2019 to 1st January 2020. The schools, colleges and universities are set to re-open on 2nd January 2020.
The order allows four days of extra holidays. Sharma in his communiqué also said that the educational institutions can compensate the four additional holidays – 23rd, 24th, 26th and 31st December by conducting classes on Saturdays and other holidays. The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has notified elections to the rural local bodies on in 27 districts of the state. The elections will be held in two phases – on 27th and 30th December 2019.
