After Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad won the battle for autonomy, it is IIM Bangalore, IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode that followed the former's footsteps and succeeded in getting autonomy for themselves. Their amended Memorandum of Association (MoA) have been approved by HRD Ministry and sent to the Law Ministry for opinion.
The amended Memorandum of Association (MoA) will make the IIMs autonomous in all respects from flexible salaries to appointing of new directors without much say of the government and setting up of new overseas campuses.
The new amendments will limit the government's role in selection of IIM-A directors. The selection board from now onwards will shortlist three candidates, while the government can only pick one from those names. Prior to this amendment, government used to constitute a search-cum-selection committee that used to shortlist the candidate's name. Besides this, the size of the board will be reduced to 12-14 people with only two members from the government.
IIMs in Kolkata and Lucknow are still to decide on the option of autonomy.
