Introduction

Your time at college will shape you a person and you will be nothing like the student who walked in, when you walk out of college after getting your degree. The things learnt at college go beyond the chosen course and become an essential part of your personality. Here are some of them:

Exposure to the world

Prior to your college days, you were cocooned in a safe environment at school and home. College suddenly brings with it an unexpected amount of freedom and responsibility as it is generally a student's first tryst with the outer world on such a personal level. You will face people and situations you never had before and you will learn to tackle them at your own pace. The lessons you learn at this point in your life will remain with you forever and will be a total eye opener for the innocent (or not) teenager that you have been. In fact, you will not even have to go outside college to gain such a perspective. Interacting with your batch mates, roommate and teachers will be a rich experience in itself and hopefully shape your perspective about people and shape your social skills.

Financial Management

In college, distractions will be many and money will be less and that will teach you self control. You will have to choose your enjoyments because indulging in all the fun activities will not be possible. Doing this will make you learn money management because that is only way you will be able to sustain yourself in college. You might also want to take up an internship or a part time job to keep earn more money. Part time jobs require a lot of commitment because working for someone after a day filled with classes is not the most alluring activity one can think of. If you go for one, keeping targets and in check will seem like a task. But, doing so will obviously teach you time management and professionalism. The tussle between needs and wants will have to be acknowledged and ended by you.

Self - Discipline

With no one to look after you, self discipline will become an essential part of your time at college. Because the distraction in form of people and activities will keep presenting themselves in front of you. You will have to learn to dodge them for your well being in the longer run. Self discipline is one of the most important qualities of a student and have to be inculcated right from school because it helps them immensely in college when they are all themselves, especially the ones living away from home. You will have to make a study schedule and stick to it. You will also have to take decisions associated with going out with friends and indulging activities like smoking and drinking and decide for yourself that what amount is manageable and what is not.

Time Management

Students cannot get very far in their academic careers with having the skill of time management. Managing time by making schedules etc is as important as any other thing that you do in college, if not more. Time management and self discipline are associated with each other because unless you are ready to sacrifice, or moderate certain activities like hanging out with friends, time management will be really tough. You can divide your task list into categories like 'weekly', 'monthly' and 'yearly' so that you never find yourself goalless. Keep pushing your limits to achieve maximum productivity but also remember to take small breaks so that your  brain doesn't wear out by constant pressure. You can also go for semester-to-semester planning

Seeking Help

There is nothing wrong with seeking help and this is something you will learn very well in college. It is tough to manage ten things all by yourself when you already have zero experience. In such a scenario, you will have to take help from your seniors and professors to guide you through at least the initial semesters. Seniors play a huge role in this situation because they were in your position one year back and know the working of things. All you have to do is go and ask them for help without getting intimidated and in all likeliness, they will help you out.

Conclusion

These are some of the lessons you will learn at college and they will all be outside the class. These are the qualities which will help you not just as a student but also as a person in longer run.
