Supreme Court of India has declared earlier that the Transgenders would be given the status of third gender in the country. To make life easier for such students, Delhi University would soon provide ‘third gender’ option in the application forms of the centralized admission forms. Previously Delhi University had given the same option in its forms for the Post-graduation application forms.
The university is also looking to introduce guidelines which can help these transgender students to get accommodated in the colleges under DU. A new project has also been started by DU’s Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC) which is named as “The Third ‘I’: Dignity of Being”. The team is bound to work on to formulate a policy which would make the university’s academic environment friendly for the transgender community.
The CIC would soon submit its guidelines draft to Delhi University admission committee. Upon review of the draft the admission committee would make required changes, if any. The CIC has also taken into consideration the issue of reservation for the transgenders and there has to be decision taken over the fact that whether they would get included into the OBC category or a new sub-category would be created. Along with these there are quite a few factors like, hostel facilities, separate washrooms, financial assistance, healthcare facilities, formation of special TG cells and anti-harassment cells, which the CIC is keeping in head while formulating the guidelines.
Last year onwards DU had given choice to the students to apply as transgenders in the admission forms and among the 90,000 applications that the university received, 9 filled the transgender option in their forms. The policy would be functional from the 2015 session and would include undergraduate students as well.
Before Delhi University, several other universities in the nation like Bangalore University and Jadavpur University has introduced the space for third gender in their application forms. Bangalore University had done this way back in 2010.
