CAT 2017 results brought cheers to numerous students, and this year 20 candidates have scored a perfect 100 percentile. After this news, IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore have also released the shortlist for the candidates who will be appearing in the next round of selection process at the IIMs. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore have shortlisted all the 100 percentilers for interview round. Whereas aspirants with 99 percentile met with disappointment as they couldn’t find their name in the shortlist of the top two IIMs.

Why 99 percentilers couldn’t make it?

As per the guidelines and admission policy released by IIM Ahmedabad, it was mentioned that a candidate’s performance in the CAT exam was the basic criteria for further shortlisting. Those failing to perform well in each section of the test will not be considered for the WAT and PI round.

An overall 99 percentile is not an entry ticket to the top IIMs if the candidate fails to qualify sectional cut-off. Let us take for an example that IIM Ahmedabad required minimum 70 percentile in each of the 3 sections and overall 80 percentile at least. Hence, to get a seat in the IIMs, even if you have secured an overall 99 percentile but didn’t qualify in the sectional percentile, IIMs wont short list you for further rounds.

    Shortlisting criteria of IIM Bangalore

For the 1st stage of shortlisting, IIM Bangalore specified that the candidate scoring overall 90 percentile with 85 in VARC while it is 80 in DILR and Quant sections will be eligible for further rounds of selection process. In addition, it also mentioned that 40% weight to CAT 2017 scores will be allotted in the 1st round of selection. If the 99 percentilers or the ones scoring less will be able to fulfil these parameters, IIM Bangalore will screen them for the final admission round to PGP 2018-20 batch.

    Shortlisting Criteria of IIM Ahmedabad

Along with the CAT percentile, IIM Ahmadabad has also laid special focus on excellent academic profile and greater diversity for admission to flagship PGP 2018-20. Needless to say that a call from IIM Ahmedabad is a golden opportunity; but unless a candidate clears all the rounds successfully, a name in the shortlist must not be considered as a sure shot entry ticket to IIMs.

The selection criteria of these institutes are available on the respective official websites. Visit and check for more details. If you have scored minimum overall and sectional percentile as specified by the institute, expect a call from them very soon.
