CBSE Class 12 Passing Marks 2026: CBSE Passing Criteria Explained for Class 12 Senior Secondary

The CBSE Class 12 Passing Marks 2026 follows the guideline of CBSE Board in which minimum 33% marks are required for Theory and Practical/ Internal Assessment separately in each subject. The Central Board of Secondary Education has laid down detailed passing criteria for CBSE 12 students appearing in the 2026 Board Examinations. With lakhs of students awaiting for their results understanding the minimum passing criteria, grading system, theory and practical requirements, compartment rules, and grace marks policy.
As per the Official CBSE Guidelines, Students need to secure 33% passing marks in both theory and practical subjects individually. To get a ‘pass’, students need to have an aggregate of 33% (minimum 33% in five subjects). Students scoring more than 33% in one but failing to secure the minimum mark in one of five subjects will be placed in compartment category.

CBSE 12th Result: Pass, Compartment and Essential Reappear Criteria
Students have to score an aggregate of 33% in a minimum of 5 subjects with 33% individually in 5 subjects. This is applicable even if a student has 6 subjects and manages a pass in 5 out of 6 subjects as per the theory + practical criteria. The additional subject’s marks are used to compute the passing criteria for the student. CBSE Class 12 Passing Marks 2026
According to CBSE’s Official Guidelines, students need to have a minimum 33% marks in every subject to qualify for the Senior School Certificate Examination. Check the table below to know the exact passing criteria:

NOTE: For subjects with Practical Examinations, students need to pass in both Theory and Practical Paper separately. Failing in either will result in failure in that subject.
CBSE 12th Result 2026: Passing Marks 80 + 20 Subjects
For Subjects carrying 80 marks theory and 20 marks practical:
Students need at least 26 marks in theory paper out of 80 and 7 marks in practical assessment out of 20.
For Example: 33% of 80 = 26.4 and 33% of 20 = 6.6
CBSE 12th Result 2026: Passing Marks 70 + 30 Subjects
For Subjects carrying 70 marks theory and 30 marks practical:
Students need at least 23 marks in theory paper out of 80 and 10 marks in practical assessment out of 20.
For Example: 33% of 70 = 23.1 and 33% of 10 = 9.9
CBSE Class 12 Grading System 2026
CBSE follows a Grading System instead of absolute rank-based grading evaluation. Grades are awarded on the basis of marks obtained by the students:
- A-1 Top 1/8th of the passed candidates
- A-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- B-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- B-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- C-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- C-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- D-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- D-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
- E Failed candidates
NOTE: Students who receive Grade E will have to appear for Compartment or Supplementary Exam.
CBSE Class 12 Passing Criteria 2026: Important Pointers

Separate Passing in Theory and Practical Exam: CBSE clearly states that students need to separately pass in both Theory and Practical/ Internal Assessment subjects. Failing in anyone may not compensate, it will be counted as failure.

Overall Requirements: Passing in both theory and practical are necessary, with that your overall passing marking should also be 33% not less than that.
