The Civil Services Preliminary Exam was conducted by the Union Public Service Commission on June 12, 2011. More than three lakh candidates are competing for the 880 vacancies this year. The results of the preliminary examination are expected mid-August and the mains exam will start in October.
This year the paper was comparatively easy. It is also the first time that Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT was implemented as the optional paper had been done away with. Also, the number of questions in the first paper was reduced to 100 from the earlier 150 and the number of questions in the second paper was just 80 instead of the earlier pattern of 120 questions.
