Ditching the trend of last few years, the placement season at IITs this year has turned out to be very fruitful. Many older IITs have continued to dominate the placement season bagging eye-popping offers from IT and corporate sector. However, what has been really surprising is the emergence of newer IITs like IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore and IIT Gandinagar joining the bandwagon of the big bucks.

According to a rough estimate, the placement sessions at newer IITs which were established after 2008 saw a rise in the average salaries and packages with recruiters shelling out big bucks to hire engineering talents. In fact, the stand-out performers among the newer IITs were IIT Mandi, IIT Ropar and IIT Indore, which saw their first international offers being made during this placement season. They also saw a significant rise in the average salaries with the top package rising up to Rs 40 lakhs annually.

Name of the Institute

Highest Package / Offer

IIT Indore

Rs 30 Lakh

IIT Hyderabad

Rs 38 Lakh

IIT Mandi

Rs 40 Lakh

IIT Patna

Rs 35 Lakh

Sharing some thoughts about the good placement season, Arvind Prakash of the training and placement cell at the institute said “This year has been great so far as B-Tech offers are already 106 in the phase I compared to a total of 118 offers received last year in phase I and II.”

A similar sentiment was shared by IIT Indore spokesperson Nirmala Menon, who said ““The placement looks better this year compared to last year,” said Ravi Mohan Prasad, head of training and placement cell at IIT Ropar. The average salary has risen, too, by as much as 30%. “The average salary last year was Rs11 lakh, whereas this year the average salary in the first phase of placements is about Rs14.5 lakh.”

Keeping up with the competition, the newer IITs have established their brand name among the corporate bigwigs, IT companies from India as well as from abroad. In order to ensure a good placement season, the newer IITs resorted to inviting more companies both from local surroundings as well as from national and international level. This trick seemed to have worked for them as they have seen an excellent placement season so far.
