Aug 21, 2014, 16:30 IST

Female feoticide has been on a rise and is a heinous crime. What are the reasons for it being so rampant? Read to know more.

Female feticide refers to the act of aborting a fetus because it is a female. India seems to be having a high rate of female feticide. The killing of unborn girls is still an alarming issue in our society which has also led to laws which ban sex determination.

It is in other words a sex selective abortion and elimination of the girl child. There are various causes for it. It is not because of an unplanned pregnancy but the causes are far more deep rooted per se.

Causes

Preference of the male child-

The first and foremost cause of killing the female fetus is the preference of the male child. The idea is that the male child becomes vital to continue the family line and hence family wants one male child. Plus there is also a belief that the male members run the house and the female is the burden on the family. Hence, the whole debate still continues and becomes an eminent cause of feticide.

Deteriorated status of women in society

Male is the stronger sex and women are the weaker is the dominant feature in any society. So , this has led to deterioration of status of women who are perceived as being dependent on men for their existence

Medical discrepancies and foul ethics

Now even though the law bans sex determination, we still have feticides going around. Why? Of course some doctors do not follow the law and do this illegally, which is why these feticides still happen.

Medical advances

Medical advanced procedures, on one hand have facilitated the process but also have led to an increase in these unethical Practices. With the ultra sound, amniocentesis, CVS the detection of sex hs becomes all the more easily to be done. With technology becoming a boon, it’s also become a bane.

Long term consequences

The possible consequences of this heinous crime can be the following-

• female trafficking and prostitution
• skewed sex ratio and disparity
• increase in crime against women like rape and assault
• population decline through huge disparity

How can we prevent this?

A social change is necessary and the need of the hour.. Change in attitudes and stringent medical practices will ensure that female feticide is negated totally from our society. A cohesive and serious effort on this issue on the part of government and the general public.
