Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University (GU), M N Patel has made his mind clear that the external courses or distance education for various faculties would soon be closed down. There are almost 15,000 external UG and PG students who are presently registered with GU.
In the senate meeting where students of the regular courses in the university raise the issue of external university, the VC made it clear that if there are further objections raised by the students regarding the external courses, he would consider closing them down. The university officials as well made their opinion clear that if the students want to pursue their studies from Distance University they can do the same by applying in Babasaheb Ambedkar University in the state. The university officials as well as the students were not very happy after the university invited applications for the external students.
According to senate members, the GU should give away the syllabus manuscripts to the external students. According to one senate member, once the university would close down its external courses, the students themselves would take admissions in self-financed colleges in the state as well as in other states. The senate members also discussed about the issue of pathetic conditions of the hostels, untidy bathrooms and apathy of the roads leading to the hostels in the campus of the university.
The senate also alleges that GU doesn’t give away results on time for which the academic calendar of the university gets affected. They said the university should also work on its time-frame of declaring the results and reassessments of the answer-sheets.
