The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) has emerged as one of the benchmark tests for graduate engineers in India. The examination is jointly conducted by IISc and IITs and to shortlist candidates for master degree education (M.Tech. / Ph.D.) in the premier technology schools of the country including IITs. This year, the flagship examination for higher education in engineering domain is scheduled to take place in February 2017. Despite its importance and immense popularity, not many are aware of all the important aspects of this engineering entrance exam. Moreover, this year several new changes have been introduced in GATE 2017, which all aspirants must consider before applying for the test.

Eligibility Criteria

Like all other engineering entrance examinations, GATE 2017 also has strict eligibility criteria to be fulfilled in order to take up the exam. Candidates who are planning to apply for GATE 2017 are advised to check that they qualify as per the minimum eligibility criteria in terms of age, qualifying degree and other parameters:

  • Nationality: All Indian nationals are eligible to apply for GATE 2017. However, this year the exam is also open for international students belonging to Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Academic Qualification: Students planning to apply for GATE 2017 also need to qualify criteria for the minimum academic qualification as listed in the table below:

How to register?

One of the biggest changes in GATE 2017 has been the complete online application process. The registration process for GATE 2017 has already begun on Sept 1 through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). Students can directly visit the registration website i.e., http://appsgate.iitr.ac.in/. The application process has been made completely online including uploading of all documents and fee payment. Unlike previous years when candidates had to send forms or documents to the organization committee or zonal centres, this year candidates can complete the entire registration process on the website.

Students, who are unaware of the GATE 2017 online registration process can follow the simple steps given below:

  • Step 1: Candidates have to register for GATE 2017 by providing their Email ID, mobile number and password
  • Step 2: After registration, you can log into your GATE 2017 account and provide all important personal, academic details like name, address and others. Candidates will also have to provide details of a valid photo identity card which they will be carrying to GATE 2017 examination hall.
  • Step 3: After filling up all the necessary information, students need to upload documents supporting this information. These include a photograph, scanned copy of the signature, thumb impression, degree certificate, medical certificate for PwD candidates, category certificate (if applicable). Students who are in their final year need to upload scanned copy of the third year (fifth/sixth semester) mark sheet in place of degree certificate.
  • Step 4: After uploading the documents, students need to pay the GATE 2017 Fee of Rs 1500/- for general category and Rs 750/- for SC/ST/Female/PwD candidates. International students will have to pay USD 50 as GATE 2017 application fee.
  • Step 5: Once you submit all the information and pay the application fees, you can download and print GATE 2017 Application Form for future reference.

Information & Document Checklist

Candidates applying for GATE 2017 will need the following documents to complete the online registration process.

  • Personal Information: Candidates will have to furnish their personal details like name, date of birth, mobile number, Email ID, parent’s name and parent’s mobile number
  • Communication Address: Current Residential Address including PIN code
  • Eligibility Degree: Scanned copy of degree certificate / last semester marksheet issued by college/university/institute. The size of scanned image should be between 10-300 kb in pdf format.
  • College Details: College address and other details along with PIN Code
  • Test Centre: Candidates will also have to choose the GATE paper and the test centre
  • Photograph: Scanned passport size photograph of 5-200 kb in jpg/jpeg format
  • Signature: Scanned copy of signature of 5-150 kb in jpg/jpeg format
  • Thumb Impression: Scanned copy of thumb impression of 2-150 kb in jpg/jpeg format
  • Category Certificate: Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD will have to provide a scanned copy of category certificate of size 10-300 kb in pdf format.
  • ID Proof: Candidate will also have to provide details of ID Proof they wish to carry for GATE 2017 Examination. For international students, their passport, government issued ID or college ID will only be accepted as valid ID proof.

GATE 2017 Syllabus

Being an entrance examination for admission to master’s degree programme, GATE prescribes detailed syllabus for all 23 papers. The same is available easily on the official website of GATE. Candidates will also have to appear for a general aptitude paper, for which separate syllabus is prescribed. PS: Candidates must keep in mind that they will not be allowed to change the paper once the application is submitted.

Exam Format

GATE 2017 has 23 different papers. Each comprises of different sections as per the defined syllabus. The exam duration will be of three hours and will contain MCQs and numerical answer questions for which candidates will have to manually key in their answers using the keypad. There is also a compulsory general aptitude section worth 15 marks for all papers. It would test language and analytical skills of the candidate.

All the papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE will have Engineering Mathematics as a compulsory section with 15 marks along with general aptitude. The main subject paper would consist of 70% of the total marks.

All the papers with codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL will only have general aptitude section worth 15 marks as a compulsory section. The rest of the 85% of the paper would comprise of core subject syllabus.

The Engineering Sciences paper would include three parts as mentioned below:

GATE 2017 Marking scheme

GATE 2017 paper would include 1 and 2 mark questions from different topics listed in the official syllabus. The total marks for the entire examination would be 100. Like other entrance examination, there is negative marking for GATE 2017 as detailed below:

  • Deduction of 1/3 mark for each wrong answer for a 1 mark question
  • Deduction of 2/3 mark for each wrong answer for a 2 mark question

GATE Admit Card

As per the schedule given above, the GATE admit card would be available to students from 5th January 2017 on the official website. Candidates will have to log into their account on the official website in order to download and print the GATE admit card. They will also have to carry the admit card along with a valid ID proof as per the details submitted in the application form. For international students, their passports will only be accepted as valid identity proof. Candidates are advised to keep the GATE admit card safe as it might be required for M.Tech admission or PSU recruitment in the next two to three years.

GATE Result

The official schedule of GATE 2017 lists 27th March 2017 as the probable date for the declaration of GATE Result. The result will be made available to the candidates online on the official website through GOAPS account. The GATE 2017 Scorecard would contain marks obtained by the candidate in the examination as well as their overall rank. Candidates must note that GATE scorecard will only be available for download to successful candidates. GATE 2017 scorecard will be valid for three years i.e., until 2020 and will be required for M.Tech admissions or for PSU recruitment. Candidates are advised to keep the GATE scorecard safe as it will be required for M.Tech admission or PSU recruitment in the next two to three years.
