The Delhi High Court issued notices to Delhi University and St Stephen;s College on 1 August 2012. The notice was made on an appeal challenging the single judge’s order that upheld the appointment of Valson Thampu as the principal of St Stephens college.
M S Frank, former vice principal in his appeal challenged the single judge order of 3 July 2012, and alleged that Thampu was illegally holding the post of principal and also did not have a valid PhD degree, however, Justice Siddharth Mridul dismissed the petition, ruling that Thampu possessed the essential qualification for the post.
Prior to the appeal made by Frank, he had mentioned that the Allahabad Agricultural University had awarded Thampu a PhD in theology, however the theology was not taught at Delhi University and the relevance of Thampu’s PhD for the post of principal was not certain.
As of now, the order said UGC had given clarification and the PhD degree awarded by the Allahabad Agricultural University is at all levels a valid degree. Valson Thampu was appointed the principal of St Stephen’s College on 12, September 2008.
