Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) is soon going to conduct the Himachal Pradesh Adminstrative Services -HPAS Main (Written) Examination from 15th February 2014.
The General English paper of the Himachal Pradesh State Services Main Examination consists of questions related to English comprehension, English grammar, and English writing. The paper is of 100 marks.
The questions are designed in a manner to test the candidate’s understanding of English and use of words. Some questions are devised to test their reasoning power and their capacity to perceive implications. Credit is given for concise and effective expression.
An analysis of the HPAS Main 2011 English paper is given below:
The paper had one unseen passage followed by 5 questions out of which one was related to précis writing. This passage accounted for 26 marks in the paper.
The next five questions were related to English Grammar, and accounted for 62 marks in total.
Out of these, one question was related to idioms/phrases. The candidates were asked to use these idioms/phrases in meaningful sentences.
The next question was about sentence correction.
Another question was about usage of words both as verb and noun in different sentences.
The next question was regarding the usage of articles and propositions in fill in the blanks form.
The next question was regarding the usage of two similar sounding words in sentences in order to distinguish them from each other. Another question was asked relatedto punctuation of a paragraph.
The last question was related to writing a paragraph on a given topic. In this question, choice was given among four options, out of which the candidates had to choose one.
