Dr. Roman Saini, in talks with Rachit Kumar Saxena of Jagranjosh.com, highlighted the key points of his IAS Prelims Preparations and also gave the dos and don’ts to the candidates. He started the preparation around two years ago during his posting in the rural area.

    About the Changed Pattern

Very much optimistic about the changes bought by the UPSC in the IAS Prelims exam in 2011, he was delighted by the introduction of CSAT and elimination of the subject paper in IAS Prelims Exam. He said the introduction of CSAT was directed to remove any undue advantages of the subject paper and termed it a very good step by UPSC. At the same time it made the examination more uniform for all the candidates. As after the introduction of CSAT no scaling is required and the more number of candidates are qualifying even in their maiden attempt.

He said joining coaching is not necessary for clearing the IAS Prelims examination but yes the candidates should take test papers and solve them under the time constraints. He said self evaluation is the best strategy.

    General Studies Paper I

For General Studies he said that the reading The Hindu newspaper helped him a lot. He says the candidates should read the Hindu Newspapers meticulously and thoroughly to achieve success in the examination. He praised the Science and Technology Page of the Hindu newspaper.
He stressed to read Biology Class XII NCERT chapter 13 - 16 for the preparation of Biology Topics for the IAS Prelims exam. For the different sections of General Studies he suggests to read them every day. The candidates need to have extensive coverage of the topics. The preparation should be extensive but with the limited depth knowledge of all topics will suffice. He stressed on making plan of the studies and follows it no matter what happens. And change the plan according to your preference and suitability.
He said Jagranjosh.com helped a lot in updating the current affairs.

    General Studies Paper II

He thanked to god and said the timely introduction of CSAT paper had helped him achieving this success. He said no particular single book is compatible for General Studies Paper II-CSAT paper,  reading The Hindu newspaper and its editorials helps a lot in solving the comprehensions of the paper. He said sometimes direct comprehensions are taken from the NCERT books, Yojana, Kurukhshetra. Watching English Movies with subtitle also helps in preparing comprehensions.
For Maths, he said doing the basic mathematics, algebra helps and he suggest that the candidates should not leave the Decision Making questions because it does not comes with the rider of negative marking. Moreover, two options are correct in those questions. They are the easy marks. He stressed on Logical, Analytical and Ethical thought process for clearing the General Studies II - CSAT Paper.
