Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE) had introduced new unique identification (UID) numbers system for Class 10 and 12 students. Students taking the ICSE and ISC exams this year are being given a permanent unique identification code that will replace the index and registration numbers.
The decision for introducing unique identification number rose out of the issues faced last year by the ICSE. The problems included handling of the wrong questions papers to students to hacking of the marks data.
The new UID and can also be used by the students to obtain duplicate result-related documents from a computerized database. The other objectives of bringing UID system are to speed up the evaluation procedure and to maintain confidentiality.
CISCE chief executive Gerry Arathoon described UIDs to be a set of 7-digit random numbers, not mentioning students' centres or roll numbers in it. The unique numbers are not possible to be accessed by others to obtain student’s marks from the council’s website. They maintain anonymity of the student to such extent that even the examiner will not know the identity of the student or the school s/he belongs to.
The UID numbers will also be able to help students in future in a situation where they want to procure duplicates of their marksheets or change their names and want marksheets re-issued in their new names, told Narendra Kumar, director of Orion India Systems ( hired by CISCE for the process).
The class 12 ISC board exams are soon to commence in a couple of days, while the Class 10 ICSE exams will start from March.
Near about 70,000 students will give ISC examination and around 1,50,000 will appear for the ICSE examniation.
