Indira Gandhi National Open University, famous for its Distant mode higher education, available for different sections of society, has put lakhs of students in jittery. The IGNOU has previously taken some steps by needlessly expanding the courses without thinking of the infrastructure. Courses are getting shut everyday leaving lakhs of students in jinx. A lot of students have canceled their admissions due to the enormous fees hike, which results in ending up of the ultimate purpose of cheap higher education and skill development.
In the last two years IGNOU has shut down nearly 300 programmes and 250 community colleges. Along with these the university has cancelled over 600 MoUs with various institutions and suspended courses through 29 partner institutions in 19 foreign countries. It has also stopped most of its on-campus programmes, India’s very first sign language research and training center, cancelled programmes running for disabled and canceled convergence scheme that used to run with regular colleges. The university has also shut down many of the chairs and special centers in the Northeast region of India.
Programmes like e-Gyankosh, thorough which IGNOU used to offer online resources for students, and a research and training assistant scheme that offers help for scholars dealing with their MPhil and PhD degrees have been decimated by the authority. Over 3,50,000 students who have completed their courses almost two years back have not received their certificates yet. There are almost 2,000 cases pending in high court against IGNOU regarding the issues.
To counter the situation a committee of vigor has been appointed who would look into the whole matter and the board is expected to get expanded by at least two more members to look after developments. An able leadership and an energetic mind can only take the prestigious university back on track.
