IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay among the Top 50 of QS Asian University Rankings

The QS University Rankings: Asia for the current year 2014 has been out, in which only two Indian institutes - Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay have managed to make it to the Top 50 ranks.

The QS University Rankings: Asia for the current year 2014 has been out, in which only two Indian institutes —Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay have managed to make it to the Top 50 ranks.  

Released on 09 May 2014, the QS Asian University rankings result comprises only IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay from India in the top 50, placing them at 38th and 41st positions, respectively.

This year 17 Indian universities have made it to the QS University Rankings: Asia, 6 more as compared to last year’s participation of 11 Indian universities/institutes. Among all the 17 Indian Universities enlisted in the QS Asian University rankings 2014, Banaras Hindu University, Panjab University, Manipal University, Amity University, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology appeared for the first time.

When compared to last year’s ranking, Delhi University has marked one step fall down from 80th rank in 2013 to 81st rank in QS Asian University rankings 2014, while IIT Madras has now slipped to 53rd rank from 49th position in 2013.

A total of 491 institutes were evaluated, 474 from 16 Asian countries viz. Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand has been ranked and 300 published.

The criteria on which the methodology for QS University Rankings: Asia was based are academic reputation (30 %); reputation of university among employers (10 %), student/ faculty ratio (20 %); research by faculty (15 %), citations per paper (15 %) and proportion of international faculty and students (5 %) and exchange programme students (5 %).

Published annually since 2009, the QS University Rankings: Asia highlights the 300 top universities in Asia, providing an overview of higher education in one of the world's most dynamic and rapidly developing regions.
