Indian Civil Services Examination Procedure

Indian civil services is considered as one of the premier services. All IAS or IPS or IFS aspirants must first clear examinations conducted by union public service commission (upsc) or state civil services commissions

Indian civil services is considered as one of the premier services. To be recruited to the post of IAS or IPS or IFS the aspirant must first clear examinations conducted by union public service commission (upsc) or state civil services commissions. The UPSC conducts examination every year to select eligible candidates for various services like- IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS etc. Notification for civil service recruitment is generally published in the month of Feb every year. An aspirant has to pass through two successive stages to be selected as a civil servant:

1. Civil services preliminary examination- It is a screening test where the nature of examination is of objective type. The aim of this stage of examination is to select candidate for the next step of examination i.e main examination.
2. Civil services main examination- It consists of written exam & interview for the final selection of candidate for various services and posts such as Indian administrative services, Indian police services, Indian foreign services, Indian revenue services etc.

The minimum age limit is 21 years and the candidate must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August of the year of the examination. The upper age limit can be relaxed up to maximum of five years in case of SC/STs, three years for OBCs, and 10 years for physically challenged persons.  An eligible candidate must hold a degree of any of the university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or recognized by university grants commission.

If an individual has missed an opportunity through UPSC to become a civil servant he has another opportunity i.e. through state public service commission. Every state has its own public service commission, and they select candidates at three levels-

1. Administrative services- It is class two services e.g. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDMs), Deputy Superintendent of police (Dy SP) etc.
2. Subordinate services- Class three services for various departments of states, like- inspectors, clerks etc.
3. Judicial services-For class two services like-civil judge junior division (munsif magistrate), Assistant Public Prosecutor etc.

The selection process is rigorous as the examination and the interview is meant to select personnel who would be expected to perform some of the toughest job in the country.
