In memory of the famous Astronaut Late Kalpana Chawla, who hailed from Karnal, the Haryana State Government has decided to establish a medical college at Karnal which would be spread across 100 acres of land. The college would be named Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCMC) and would come up in the Kutali village of Karnal districts.
While announcing about the college the Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar pointed out that at least one medical college with 200 seats, 750-1000 bed hospital, a dental college and few other medical institutions in coordination with the centre would come up in the university campus. The campus would be fully aided with modern medical facilities so that the people and student at the university would get the best of services and training respectively.
Khattar has already asked officials to sped up the process and complete the project as per schedule. The college containing 100 seats is expected to open its gates from the 2016-17 session. A total of Rs 645 crore would be incurred by the government for the KCGMC of which Rs. 143 crore has already been spent.
A concept paper regarding the proposed academic structure and detailed future follow-up plans would be presented by the director of Kalpana Chawla Medical College in the next month, after which the scope and precision of the university would get clearer.
Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-American astronaut and first Indian woman in space. She was among the seven astronauts who were tragically killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia. She was born in Karnal on July 1, 1961, as the youngest of four children.
