National Sports Day is a special occasion celebrated in various countries to promote sports, physical fitness, and the importance of sportsmanship.

In India, National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 to honour the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, who has been one of the best field hockey players in history. Various sporting events around the country mark this wonderful day. Not only this, but it also teaches us the value of teamwork and perseverance. The day inspires people of all ages and encourages them to play sports to be healthy. Take a look at some of the fun and engaging National Sports Day activities for school students.

 1. Water Sponge Relay

Get a twist to a classic relay race that is a great activity for National Sports Day.

All you need to play the game is:

  • A sponge per team
  • A bucket per team
  • A tape or marker pen

Divide the children into teams that consist of two teams. All of them should be standing one metre apart, with both teams facing each other. Place an empty bucket with water by passing the full sponge over their heads and under their legs.

 2. Five-in-One Race

Well, this activity is great for students to encourage them to move in lots of different ways. For this activity, you can set up a 50-metre track with running lanes and some cones.

On this track, students can go for the five-in-one race activity that includes the following:

  • Run for the first 10-metres
  • Hop for the next 10 metres
  • Jump for yet another 10-metres
  • Skip for 10-metres
  • At, the last run backward.

This way, teachers can select the first three winners and give certificates to other students.

3. The Sack Race

The Sack race is one of the most commonly performed activities during National Sports Day. All the children would need to place both their legs inside a sack and then hop forward towards the finish line with it.

 4. Tug-Of-War

Well, this game is a team game of strength and strategy. The kids and children would have to form two teams and then pull the tug-of-war rope in two teams. The team that manages to hold the rope will win the game.

 5. Two-Legged Race

For this race, children work together to run the length of the track, with their ankles and legs tied together. Children of similar height should team up together to win the game. The one who makes it to the end of the track wins the game.

 6. Pass The Hula-Hoop

This fun sports day game is an amazing team-building exercise. All the teachers have to do is make the children stand in a circle and then hold hands. The children must work together to pass the hula-hoop and that too, without breaking the chain. It can be a fun activity to perform for National Sports Day.

 7. Setting Up A Treasure Hunt

Well, a treasure hunt can be a wonderful game to put the children’s bodies and minds to the test for National Sports Day. The teachers can simply hide a ‘piece’ of treasure and then make the hint cards for students. Students can team up in two or four to find the ‘piece’ of treasure. Those who win can get the medals and the rest can get certificates to encourage them.

 8. Lemon And Spoon Race

You must have heard about this easy race that is always there at Sports Day events in school. Here, the kids and children will have to speed walk or run while balancing the lemon on the spoon. If the kids make it to the end of the track with lemon on the spoon, then they win the race.
