Sports is essential for the physical as well as mental well being of all. Sports inculcates spirit, discipline and teamwork in students. Major Dhyan Chand is known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey’ for his control over the ball. The hockey legend was born on August 29, 1905.

He rose as the star of the hockey team in the pre-independence period. He began his career with the regimental team of the British Indian Army. Have you wondered how Dhyan Singh became Dhyan Chand? Well the hockey legend was extremely dedicated towards his sport and practiced playing often during night under the moonlight, which earned him the name Dhyan Chand.

He is considered to be one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He won tons of awards in his career. Major Dhyan Chand was conferred the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1956. The legendary player passed away in 1979. His life and devotion to his sport continues to inspire hockey players.
