1. What is the work of the police?

Answer:

The police are responsible for maintaining law and order to establish peace in society. Whenever there is any case of theft, accident, injury, fight, etc., it is their responsibility of the police to enquire, investigate and take action. In this way, the police provide safety and security to the general public.

2. List two things that the work of a Patwari includes.

Answer:

The two things that the work of a Patwari includes are :

  • Measuring land and keeping land records.
  • Maintaining and updating the records of the village.

3. What is the work of a Tehsildar?

Answer:

The work of a Tehsildar includes the following responsibilities:

  • To hear the disputes related to land.
  • To supervise the work of the Patwaris.
  • To ensure that land records are properly kept and land revenue is collected.
  • To ensure that the farmers can easily obtain a copy of their record.
  • To providing caste certificates to the students.

4. What issue is the poem trying to raise? Do you think this is an important issue? Why?

Answer:

The poem is trying to raise the issue of gender-based discrimination. It talks about the rights of a girl child. In our society, only sons are considered to have complete right over their father's property whereas daughters do not get any share. This is not fair, since the Indian constitution always talks about equality and justice for all. Therefore, a girl child should be given the same right as a male child is given.

5. In what ways are the work of the Panchayat, that you read about in the previous chapter, and the work of the Patwari related to each other?

Answer:

Work of the Panchayat is related to the work of a Patwari in the following ways:

  • Panchayat solves the land disputes and the Patwari maintains the land records.
  • Panchayat implies the tax and revenue and the Patwari organises the collection of land revenue from the farmers.

6. Visit a police station and find out the work that the police have to do to prevent crime and maintain law and order in their area especially during festivals, public meetings, etc.

Answer:

During festivals, public meetings, etc., the police take the following actions to control crime and maintain law and order in an area:

  • The police become more alert and work actively in the area assigned to them.
  • Police personnel are deployed to observe the situation closely.
  • CC TV cameras are installed at particular points from where they can keep a watch on the activities of the people.
  • They barricade the area to control the mob.
  • Information booths are installed where people can seek any kind of help.
  • Proper lighting is also done in the whole area.

7. Who is in charge of all the police stations in a district? Find out.

Answer:

The Superintendent of Police (SP) is in charge of all the police stations in a district.

8. How do women benefit under the new law?

Answer:

Under the new law, sons, daughters and their mothers can get an equal share in the property. Thus, if a woman has any problem, she can always use her share instead of being dependent on others. This has brought about a sense of security in the minds of women.

9. In your neighbourhood, are there women who own property? How did they acquire it?

Answer:

Students should find out the answer to this question by talking to the elders in their neighbourhood.
