Its full form is National Institute of Open Schooling and it was established in 1989 to facilitate those students who were unable to pursue regular education due to various compulsions. It was earlier known as national open school.

Features

Apart from school level educational courses NIOS also offers Vocational courses. These are customized courses suitable to various needs which make it easier to choose a course. A language course is compulsory along with these courses there is no upper age limit for admission in NIOS.

Qualification

For admission in secondary course the student should have cleared 8th std. exam. The candidates should have passed out 10th Std. for admission in a senior secondary course. Admission to a Vocational course can be sought on the basis of a secondary or senior secondary pass certificate.

Misconception

Normally people think that the value of open schooling is unlike the Regular school education but it’s an absolute misconception. Almost 75 percent of the Universities have recognized the National Institute of Open Schooling’s senior secondary school course for admission.

Open Schools in the States

NIOS has regional centers in Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata (Bhubaneswar), Guwahati, Allahabad (Dehradun), Patna, Kochi and Bhopal. In the states like Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir state level open schools have been established in association with National Institute of Open School. Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have their own state level Open Schools.

Teaching Methods

The institute provides education with the help of state of the art communication equipments. Students are provided with self learning study material and they can clarify their queries at contact classes held in all the centers. Students are given audio and video demonstrations to explain the text.

Application

Students can apply online for admission in the NIOS. Process of admission in the academic course (secondary and senior secondary) starts on July 1 and closes on July 31 every year. For more information you can log on WWW.nios.ac.in .
