The struggle of India’s top-notch Higher Education Institutions to make a mark in the top 100 list of the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings failed once again.

The struggle of India’s top-notch Higher Education Institutions to make a mark in the top 100 list of the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings failed once again. This year, again none of India's 700 universities and 35,539 colleges could attain a spot in the top 100 college/University global list.

The global list of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2013-2014 has been released in London on 6 March 2014. The list is based on an invitation-only survey, conducted by senior academics.

Among all the Indian institutions making a mark in the rankings, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has achieved the highest position at just below 200 while last year, the same was placed at the 130th position.

Punjab University, which our Prime Minister had graduated from, is placed in the unranked section of 226-300.
Surprisingly, the Indian Institutes of Technology - Bombay obtained a place among the 210-220 group, while IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur had attained position in the lowest grade, among 351-400.

More to the concern, India is  the only country among the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) which failed to make global top 100 cut in the Times list. Even China boasts two of its Universities holding a spot in the top 50 list, whereas Russia and Brazil are attaining one spot each, said Phil Baty, the editor of the rankings.

The first spot in the top 100 list is yet again acquired by Harvard University in the US. The second to sixth positions were attained by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, University of Cambridge, The University of Oxford and The University of California, Berkeley, respectively.

Before finalizing the list, a survey was conducted which had received 58,117 responses from over 150 countries in four annual rounds. The recent results are published based on 10,536 responses from published senior academics, who reported to have an average of 18 years of working experience in higher education

Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2013-2014 supported by Thomson Reuters are the only global university performance tables to judge world-class universities across all of their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook by employing 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available. The Times ranking is accepted and trusted by scholars, students, donors, university leaders, industry and governments, according to PhIl Baty.
