Delhi Directorate of Education has initiated the admission process of mentally challenged children in the Government-run mainstream schools from the academic year 2012-13

Proving that disability is no barrier to learning, the Delhi Directorate of Education has initiated the admission process of mentally challenged children in the mainstream schools. In the academic year 2012-13, these 44 educable kids between the age group of 5 to 18 years will be seen in the government-run mainstream schools.

The selected children with disabilities (32 boys and 12 girls) reside in the Government-run Asha Kiran Home in Rohini which have 392 children in the age group 5- 18 years. A senior Education Department official informed, "The children were selected after an assessment by the government representatives who noted that the children could be immediately sent to government-run mainstream schools".

Advocate Ashok Agarwal, who works in the area of Human Rights, further informed that a team from Department of Education found 44 children educable, 83 boys and 61 girls trainable and 77 boys and 43 girls were found to be educable and trainable.

The step is seen as a welcome change for children with disabilities wherein their Right to Education was violated.
