Q. It is very difficult to figure out where to start and how to start? What was your strategy when you first decided to appear for the civil services exam?
A. When I started preparing for the prelims I focused on the vast General Studies paper. Also I concentrated on strengthening my grasp over traditional subjects like polity, modern India, geography, science in the initial few months. Then I concentrated extensively on the current affairs and general knowledge. Making a start is a challenge, but once you start, the preparation itself will take you in the right direction.
Q. What was your preparation strategy for the Preliminary examination?
A. As stated earlier, an extensive approach is needed for prelims preparation.
Q. General Studies is a very vast section. How did you prepare for it? Any books that you relied upon?
A. Yes, it is too vast. I used some GK books, civil service magazines to update current affairs. I also relied upon the internet as it was very helpful in my preparation.
Q. Finally, what is your opinion on the changes made in the Prelims? Do you think the exam is shifting towards application of knowledge? If yes, how?
A. I think the CSAT is a welcome step as it is aimed at ascertaining the aptitude of the person for civil service rather than testing the subject knowledge.
