The huge backlog of vacancies in teaching positions in SC/ST categories is a major point of concern in the Indian education system.
As per the data provided by the government of India in the year 2011,48.5 per cent of posts in twenty four Central varsities were vacant during 2010-2011. The stipulated quota for SCs and STs in Central institutions is 15 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively.
It is rather astounding to see that a total backlog in SC category at the entry-level position of Lecturer was three forty one out of Seven forty required posts.
The situation is worse at the higher ranks, where over eighty four per cent of posts for Readers in the SC-ST category were vacant in 2010-2011. And, over ninety two per cent Professor’s positions in these categories are vacant.
Though the situation is in a very sorry state, and though the problem could be tackled with employment for SC/ST candidates, it is also important to understand that at times there is a need of specialized teachers, and that alone could be the root cause of the problem.
